There are limits to artistic self-indulgence, limits to how long a filmmaker can keep spinning his creative wheels before his work approaches self-parody, and limits to the tolerance of even a devoted specialized audience for artistic vacuity, and they are all well exceeded by "The Limits of Control."
... shallow poetaster mode ... most verbally inexpressive leading man since Wall-E ... there are no cultural, spiritual or historical reverberations on this trip ... insider gags that verge on the silly.

And then there's the music, mostly by a Japanese electronic noise outfit called Boris, that drones on ultimately to congeal into a state of undead rigor mortis.

Один блоггер (Doctor Sunshine, Criterion Forum) пишет об этом ревью вскользь:
I can't take them seriously when they use words like "thesp" and "protag". And "prexy" has earned them a special place in hell.

Критик Jonathan Rosenbaum находит в главном отрицательном персонаже явные черты Дика Чейни, в остальном ограничивается компактным изложением восторга с большим количеством фотоцитат из Криса Дойля, кинематографиста, и завершает элегантной полемикой с предыдущим оратором:

Only then did I allow myself to decide that this beautifully shot and painstakingly constructed film is a self-indulgent bucket of hogwash.

But both films leave you thinking the same thing: Wow, I really need to get to Spain as soon as humanly possible. In the case of The Limits of Control, don't bother waiting till the movie's over.

и не стал стесняться высказывать соображения своего лирического героя о других актёрах:

Bill Murray is appearing so frequently in such films I think it is time for him to star in a smutty action comedy.

Завершается анализ малопонятным привлечением Дзиги Вертова и "Человека с киноаппаратом", который, по мнению Эберта (или его мнимого друга - тёзки известного актёра) лучше, чем Джармуш.
