Мне её очень жалко, потому и приятно - литература дала эмоцию!, отчасти потому и вуайеризм. Покорная - в смысле, судьбе, нетребовательная, немстительная. Отчасти покорная воле своего безучастного мужика. Любовь и преданность, когда они безответны, переходят в немного другую плоскость. Эмоционального мазохизма, что ли. На этом и держится пафос произведения. Вуайеризм не в том смысле, что именно в замочную скважину уборной или в декольте, а отстранённое наблюдение за человеком, который не знает (вариант: не хочет; знает, что не и т.д.), что за ним наблюдают. Вы не видели фильм "Порнограф"? Разрешите порекомендовать в отместку. Там есть волшебный момент - постаревший режиссёр порнофильмов вслед за какой-то незнакомой бабой с улицы заходит к ней в квартиру - он сначала заходит в подъезд, а у неё дома звонит телефон, она спешит, оставляет дверь распахнутой, а он входит незамеченный и проскальзавыет в спальню, садится на кровать, листает книгу с туалетного столика, заглядывает в разную мебель, не помню точно. Потом быстро выходит, бросив немного ошалевшей женщине с телефоном: "Я сумасшедший вообще!" Это вуайеризм - читателя, зрителя, автора - который я имел в виду.
Психологизменные намёки (навскидку тяжело, но я надеюсь, что мне удастся дать понять). Узнавание типчика при появлении Хауи Крофта. Здесь: Corinne took a deep breath. "About your wife and my husband going away together." Howie Croft held up his reply until he had finished crunching his second ice cube into liquid. When he finished he looked at Corinne, oozing with confidential confidence. "Well, I tellya—what's your first name anyways?"
Появление немного корявой "confidential confidence" угадывается читателем очень хорошо: Корин говорит о связи между её мужем и его женой - типчик начинает расстёгивать ширинку (повторно).
Вот пример всего вместе - вуайеризм (даже чуть-чуть плоти!) и снисходительная проницательность за счёт автора (нам очень понятно поведение девицы):
She checked into a hotel, took a hot bath, dressed herself again, and proceeded to sit in her room for the next seventeen hours. She looked at five magazines. She counted bricks in the office building across the street; vertical patterns, horizontal and diagonal patterns. When it got dark outside she put three coats of polish on her nails. While she was waiting for her third coat of polish to dry she suddenly stood up from her chair, walked over to the telephone, and placed a hand on it. But there was an electric shock on the same table with the phone. She saw almost with delight that it was eleven o'clock at night. She felt saved. It was much too late to do any phoning. It was much too late to tell her husband all she had learned about Bunny from Howie Croft. It was much too late to find out if her husband needed any money. It was exactly the right time to take another hot bath. She did so. But with the bath towel still wrapped around her she suddenly walked straight to the telephone and asked the operator for the number she knew by heart.

But around six in the evening, one of those connubial accidents happened to her which disable a wife—sometimes for months—from speaking up. She happened to open a closet door and one of Ford's suit jackets—one she had never seen—fell across her face. Besides having a certain natural olfactory value to her, the jacket had two great holes at the elbows. Either hole alone could have pledged her to loving silence. At any rate, when at seven Ford came home, she had been ready for at least an hour to be the last person in the world to ask him for an explanation. (Мне не очень понятен этот эпизод.) Кстати, объяснение Форда в конце про "Brain" мне тоже осталось не совсем понятным, возможно, это ссылка на какой-то фильм.
Ещё о проницательности: неизбежное соотнесение предпочтений Форда во взрослой жизни с картиной из его детства.
